The hope perspective

If there is a God why does he allow suffering?

sunlight for extensive periods and can be an area of risk that is not thought about leading to RT arm problems.
SPIRITUAL ENERGY At the beginning we talked of the different energies that come to us from the sun's rays, that enable us to function, but there is another energy too - spiritual energy. We have already shown that eating foods formed by sunlight energy, provides us with life energy, and in turn gives mental energy. But there is more. A newly unclogged mind frees the way for spiritual energy to be felt. Not through a mystical experience, but finding we notice beauty around us. Our heart is more tender and our desire to do right is stronger. We find we have a conscience. Moral energy, perhaps?
The sunlight brings us so many benefits, not just warmth and comfort and physical well being. As the plants around us absorb the energy from its rays they provide the good quality food that makes our minds and bodies work better, and enable us to function as full human beings with a new dignity and understanding in our lives. Restored health and sense of hope is a very real benefit.
However we must think about this carefully. People in days gone by saw the sun as the lifegiver and had festivals to celebrate when the sun came back after the winter. The sun became their god. Even today we have SUN-DAY, and is not this the day when many people still worship. On this day they thought of the sun, but not its Maker. Many churches have a sun burst design somewhere in the building where pagan and Christian blended.
The sun did not just evolve. God was there before the sun. He placed it there for our benefit as human beings. Think about these words. ‘And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of heaven, to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs and for seasons, and for days and for years… to give light upon the earth: and it was so….and God saw that it was good. And the evening and the morning were the fourth day.' Genesis 1:14-19. The sun was created by God for our wellbeing. God the Creator is the life giver, not the sun.
  1. The suns ray’s can pierce even thick clouds, so try to get a walk even if it is raining snowing or cloudy and blowing. The sun is still working for you. If you cannot get out sit or stand by a south facing open door or window for a few moments, on days when it is sensible to do so.
  2. Take time to look at the colours around you. How many shades of green are there? All the colours around us are as a result of the sun. We can see this when the sun begins to set and the colours are harder to discern. Pale blue and white things show up best, reds disappear.
  3. Make a list of the things that you enjoy about sunshine - eg warmth on your back and shoulders, reflections in water, golden edges to clouds. What do you like?

REFLECTION We often talk about the seasons changing and this is a cause of concern to some people. The seasons - spring, summer, autumn and winter come to us because of our angle to the sun. We need the sun for our growing seasons and crop harvests. Sometimes we have unusual conditions that cause us to be slightly uneasy. Things feel different. There is however, a Bible Promise that says, “While the earth remaineth, seed time and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night, shall not cease.” It is good that this verse was written for us, to give us peace.

End words
‘But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings.’ God created the sun for our blessing, bringing us energy and life. Everyday it shines on the good and the bad. Jesus too, is described as the Sun. He can bring us healing and peace, in our hearts and minds, by His warmth and comfort, and daily faithfulness. Even with no knowledge of God we can see what He is like from His symbol of sunshine - He is our power and strength for healing and life. He gives daily life even to those who do not think of Him or love Him.
